Introduction to Box Semi-Trailers

Aug 19, 2026

A box semi-trailer is a type of semi-trailer with a box-shaped cargo compartment. The axle is positioned at the center of gravity, and the trailer itself is unpowered, relying on a tractor for propulsion. It is suitable for transporting various goods. Based on the type of cargo box, it is mainly divided into passenger box type and trailer box type. Passenger box type trailers generally have an integrated structure between the cargo box and the cab, such as ambulances; trailer box type trailers generally have a separate structure between the cargo box and the cab, such as less-than-truckload (LTL) box trucks.

The development of semi-trailers began in 1898 with Alexander Winton's invention of the world's first trailer. In 1914, Auguste Fruhoff developed a semi-trailer for transportation. Modern box semi-trailers are developing towards lightweight, large-capacity, specialized, and energy-efficient designs. Semi-trailer transportation efficiency can be increased by 30%-50%, costs reduced by 30%-40%, and fuel consumption reduced by 20%-30%.
