The Development History Of Self-Dumping Semi-Trailers

Jul 17, 2026

In 2016, the "Regulations on the Management of Overweight and Oversized Vehicles on Highways," known as the "921 New Policy," officially came into effect, launching a nationwide campaign to crack down on overloading and oversize vehicles. This laid the foundation for the subsequent transformation of the dump semi-trailer market towards standardization and lightweight design.

Around 2017, the legality of flatbed dump semi-trailers attracted widespread attention within the industry, sparking debate due to inconsistent standards across different regions. Subsequently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology suspended the uploading of qualification certificates for this type of vehicle. In 2019, the state further improved relevant laws for semi-trailers, propelling the semi-trailer industry towards a healthier and more mature market.

Entering the 2020s, policies to control overloading continued to deepen. New policies implemented in 2025 imposed strict limits on the total mass of vehicles, such as a 36-ton limit for four-axle vehicles and a 49-ton limit for six-axle vehicles, promoting the design of lightweight models. Lightweight models with a curb weight as low as 6.3 tons appeared on the market, representing a significant weight reduction compared to traditional models.

Meanwhile, industry technology is also advancing. For example, in July 2025, Hunan Tiehua Jingfu Automobile Group Co., Ltd. applied for a patent for "an intelligent welding system for a multi-functional self-dumping semi-trailer".
